Introduction

Welcome to the Integrated Management of Coffee Stem Borer in India’ course. This course is designed for AAA Agronomists and technical advisors, providing a crucial foundation for adopting sustainable pest management practices.

The Challenge:

Coffee is one of the world’s most valuable agricultural commodities, and India is among the largest producers. However, coffee worldwide is affected by various pests and diseases. The Coffee White Stem Borer (CWSB), Xylotrechus quadripes, significantly reduces the yield potential of Arabica coffee.

The Impact and Urgency:

  • Infestation by CWSB can reduce annual coffee yields by up to 60% in India.
  • This pest causes an estimated financial loss of approximately USD 20 million each year.
  • The larvae bore tunnels into the main stem and lateral branches, disrupting the vascular transport system, resulting in wilting and, in severe cases, the death of the plants.

Current management strategies must move beyond reliance on limited chemical treatments. This course will equip you with the knowledge to implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach that focuses on sustainable solutions
By completing this course, you will be able to design a resilient, sustainable, and profitable IPM action plan that directly enhances the resilience of coffee cultivation in India.
